Il tuo film mostra le avventure di due giovani ragazze che sperimentano la vita nella foresta. Potresti dirci qualcosa di più sul concetto di Forest Language?

Your film shows the adventures of two young girls who experience life in the forest. Could you please tell us something more about the concept of “Forest Language”?

Quando ho girato Forest Language mi trovavo in una residenza per artisti nel nord della Svezia. Si trattava di una residenza speciale alle quale anche le famiglie potevano partecipare. Quindi sono stato particolarmente attratto da questo tipo di esperienza poiché gli artisti spesso sono costretti ad allontanarsi dalla famiglia e questo causa isolamento. Penso sia difficile lavorare come artista e avere, allo stesso tempo, una famiglia da crescere.

Come è possibile vedere nel mio film, l'intera area a disposizione era concentrata in una città molto piccola. Attualmente vivo in un'area urbana in Ohio dove la maggior parte della terra è coltivata per uso agricolo o industriale, quindi, avere un tale spazio in Svezia è stato, per me e per le bambine, indubbiamente motivante. Quando ho iniziato la residenza non avevo progetti, solo una tela bianca su cui lavorare ma, ben presto ho notato come le mie figlie non avessero problemi a usare la loro immaginazione, esplorare, imparare cose nuove e inventare storie a partire da ciò che il luogo suggeriva loro. Ho immediatamente pensato che quanto stava accadendo fosse molto interessante e, al fine di non spezzare l’incantesimo, ho adottato uno stile documentaristico per permettere alle due bambine di non essere influenzate nel loro comportamento da nessuno, lasciando loro la possibilità di rischiare.

When I shot Forest Language I was in an artist residency in the north of Sweden. It was a special residency in which families could also participate. I was particularly attracted to this kind of experience because artists often have to be away from their families and this causes isolation. I think it is quite difficult to work as an artist and have a family to raise at the same time.

As you can see in my film, the entire available area was concentrated in a very small town. I currently live in an urban area in Ohio where most of the land is cultivated for agricultural or industrial use, so having such a space in Sweden was undoubtedly motivating, both for me and the girls. When I started the residency I didn't have any plan, just a blank canvas to work on, but I soon noticed how my daughters had no problem using their imagination, exploring, learning new things and inventing stories from what the place suggested to them. I immediately thought that what was happening was very interesting and, in order not to break the spell, I adopted a documentary style to allow the two girls not to be influenced in their behavior by anyone, thus leaving them the possibility to take risks.

Qual è la tua idea di femminile e come descriveresti un concetto del genere?

What is your idea of feminine and how would you describe such concept?

Non credo di avere un'idea specifica in termini di comportamento o di aspetto visivo. Secondo me il femminile riguarda un'idea di scelta e di come si vuole agire e interagire con il mondo, avere il controllo su come ci si vuole presentare. Penso che in Forrest Language il femminile risieda proprio nell'idea di indipendenza e nella possibilità di prendere le proprie decisioni, mostrandosi per quello che si vuole apparire. Riflettendo su alcune questioni sociali, possiamo notare come la politica nella sfera comunitaria riesca, in qualche modo, a controllare situazioni e comportamenti.

I don't think I have a specific idea in terms of behavior or visual appearance. To me, the feminine is about an idea of choice and how you want to act and interact with the world, having control over how you want to present yourself. I think in "Forrest Language" the feminine resides precisely in the idea of independence and in being able to make your own decisions, showing up for what you want to look like. Reflecting on some social issues, we can see how politics in the social sphere somehow manages to control situations and behaviors.

L'intero video è stato girato nella natura, tuttavia, il suo finale ha un improvviso cambio di ambientazione. Perché hai scelto di creare un tale contrasto?

The whole video was filmed in the wild, however its ending has a sudden change of setting. Why have you chosen to create such contrast?

Ho girato Forest Language principalmente in uno spazio selvaggio, che è in effetti l'ambiente principale in cui volevo che lo spettatore vivesse maggiormente il video. Attraverso questo finale ho voluto creare un momento di sollievo comico, durante il quale qualcosa di serio viene improvvisamente interrotto da una scena ironica: se in natura le bambine sembrano indipendenti, nel negozio di caramelle tornano alle loro abitudini. Questo diverso tipo di realtà mostra un quadro completo. Viene presentata una prospettiva e un momento diverso, che non solo fa svanire la natura, ma rompe l’equilibrio creato.

I shot Forest Language mainly in a wild space, which is actually the main setting where I wanted the viewer to experience the video the most. Within the ending sequence I wanted to create a moment of comic relief, something serious is interrupted by a scene of joke: if in nature the girls seem independent, in the candy shop they return to their kids' habits. This different kind of reality shows a whole rounded picture. A different perspective and moment is presented and this, not only makes nature fade away, but breaks the balance created.

Di cosa ti occupi nella tua produzione artistica? Quali sono le caratteristiche principali del tuo linguaggio e della tua visione artistica?

What does your artistic research concern? Which are the main features of your language and artistic vision?

Soprattutto nelle mie opere cinematografiche, la mia autobiografia ha un'influenza effettiva. Come artista, ogni esperienza ha un significato profondo, quindi mi piace usare le mie opere come un diario personale e creare qualcosa proprio a partire da esso. Cerco di coinvolgere il più possibile la mia famiglia, anche se il più delle volte appare nelle mie creazioni quasi involontariamente. È importante ora per me concentrarmi sulla realizzazione di contenuti riguardanti la mia vita. Potrei parlare di politica e cultura americana in generale, ma preferisco affrontare questi temi attraverso la mia personale esperienza. In questi termini, quando rappresento il femminile lo faccio dal mio punto di vista, dalla mia osservazione poiché questo è tutto ciò che conosco e in cui i fruitori possono riconoscersi. Forest Language è, per questa ragione, particolarmente legato alle mie figlie. Le mie opere cercano sempre di calmare le acque. Nello specifico, in questo film, sono molto osservativo, non dico mai nulla. Il tempo passa lentamente e, durante alcune sequenze, devi solo guardare e osservare, proprio come nel mondo reale. A volte ci sono inquadrature che appaiono un po' più veloci, quindi preferisco fare un passo indietro e lasciare che questi diventino momenti da apprezzare e vivere.

Especially in my film works, my autobiography has an actual influence. As an artist, every experience has a deep meaning, so I like to use my works as a personal diary and create something just from it. I try to involve my family as much as possible, although most of the time they appear in my creations almost unintentionally. It is important now for me to focus on making content about my life. I could talk about American politics and culture in general, but I prefer to approach these topics through my own personal experience. In these terms, when I represent the feminine I do it from my point of view, from my observation since this is all that I know and in which the viewers can recognize themselves. Forest Language is, for this reason, particularly related to my daughters.

My work always tries to settle down calmly. Specifically, in this film, I am very observational, I never say anything. It has a slow time passing and, during some sequences, you just have to watch and observe, just like in the real world. Sometimes there are shots that appear a little faster, so I prefer to take a step back and let these become moments to appreciate and experience.
